Naming one baby can take hours of thoughtful consideration, but naming multiples can be extremely difficult. In addition to all of the normal considerations, parents of multiples have extra concerns about which names to choose.

[edit] Individual Identities

A name identifies a person for life, and it is very important for a person to be comfortable with their own name. Many parents of multiples believe that their children’s names need to have a common theme (Jewel & Ruby), or sound the same (Kayla & Kylie). This is not the case; in fact, it is important for your children to have a sense of individuality – something that separates them as a person from their siblings.

[edit] Family Pressures

When you are expecting twins or multiples, it is not uncommon for relatives to become a bit pushy about what names you use. In most cases, the logic behind this is that if you are having more than one, you get to choose more names, so of course there should be some room for old Auntie Ethel’s name in there somewhere, right? It is important to stand your ground on this issue. Choose a name that you like, so that you don’t regret it later on.

[edit] Other Considerations

There are many other things to consider when you are expecting multiples, such as:

  • If you have a preference of names, which baby gets your favourite name? Should it be the first born? In the long term, this won’t be so much of an issue, because the child will grow into his or her name, until it is a perfect fit.
  • Personalized items are always nice to have, but what happens if one twin’s name is commonly available on things like key rings, towels and jewelry, and the other’s is seldom available? To avoid this, you could choose names that are at approximately the same level in popularity. You could also have these items tailor made for your multiples.
  • If you are naming one of your multiples after a loved one, consider how the others would feel by not bearing that name. To avoid this issue, you could find multiple derivatives to use in the middle name slot. You could also choose a number of different people to name your children after.
