From WikiParenting
Prior to the invention of ultrasound technology, the only way to determine the gender of a baby you were carrying was: 1) wait until they were born and see for yourself or 2) consult the old wives tales.
This collection of pregnancy superstitions have been passed from one generation to the next, for many, many years. They may not predict the gender of your baby as accurately as an ultrasound or amniocentesis, but they are a lot more fun.

[edit] The Pendulum Method
- Fashion a pendulum by tying one of the mother’s rings – preferably the wedding band if she can get it off – to a string.
- Then you must determine what means yes and no to the pendulum. Hold it over an object such as a spoon, and ask the pendulum “Is this a spoon? Observe how the pendulum swings over the object when you ask it a true question – this is your yes answer. Again, hold the pendulum over the spoon and ask it a false question “Is this a book?” Observe how the pendulum swings in response to the false question – this is your no answer.
- Now that you know how your pendulum swings for both yes and no, hold it over the mother’s stomach and ask “Is this baby a boy?” By observing the pendulums swing, you can determine the gender of your child.
