Baby Names
From WikiParenting
Picking out baby namesis one of the rituals of pregnancy. Besides being asked whether you are going to have a boy or a girl, what you are going to name the baby is probably the next most popular question that you will be asked while you are pregnant. Since your baby will have the name for the rest of their life, take the time to pick a beautiful and suitable name appropriate for your child.

[edit] Naming tips
Here are some tips for naming your baby:
[edit] Plan for all options
Choose several names for both sexes, but don’t settle on a name until you see your baby. You might change your mind when you see your baby for the first time, or your ultrasound may have been wrong.
[edit] Things to think about
Decide with your partner:
- How many names the baby will have
- What last name will be used
- If you want a short or long name
- If you are going to name the baby after someone
- Do you want a popular name or not
- Is the meaning of the name important
- Does it matter what the origin of the name is
[edit] Research names
Once you have answered those questions, you will know in what direction to search for names. An excellent website to research baby names is www.babynamesworld.com
[edit] More naming tips
Make up a list of names that you are interested in and then narrow down the list by using the following tips:
- Is the name easy to pronounce and spell? Alternate spellings of traditional names may make the name unique, but it may be commonly misspelled. And names that look like a traditional name but are pronounced differently may cause your child to constantly correct people later in life.
- Does it pass the kitchen door test? Imagine yelling out your child’s name to call him to dinner…If the name does not feel comfortable, keep searching for names.
- Do the initials spell out anything undesirable?
- Make sure that you consider the whole name as it is said together. Keep a balance with the first and last names. If your last name is short try a long first name. If your last name is long, stick with a short sounding first name.
- Don’t give your child a name that is too childish. The name will not be suitable when they are older. If you want to call your child Billy, name him William so he has the option of the more formal name later on.
- Is it possible for others to come up with negative nicknames easily? Make sure the baby name that you choose can pass the playground test.
- Do you have another child with a similar sounding name or ends with the same sound? You may have a hard time getting the right child to answer you when you call.
- Avoid naming your child after popular celebrities – they may be role models now, but their next stint in rehab or a photo lineup may be just around the corner.
- Don’t choose a name that is too strong – Fauna may grow up to be an electrician and Rock may grow up to be a nurse.
- Stay away from the top ten names for the last few years but do not go for an exotic name. Research has shown that children with odd names get teased more, are scored lower on exams, and are passed over for jobs as they move through life. And you don’t want your child to be one of five of the same name in his class.
